Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess and a simple townsman. The princess and the townsman started talking and slowly over time through good times and bad fell in love with each other.

The princess knew that the townsman would love her and would do as much as he could to make her happy, keep her and her family safe, and be with her until the day would come when he drew his last breath.

But the princess did not want to let the townsman enter her world. Though she never explained, other to say he would not understand. He suspected that her kingdom wanted her to be with someone of more substance, and perhaps even she wanted such things, even though it would mean that she would likely be with someone that did not truly love her.

Though the townsman tried his best to get the princess to marry him. The princess rejected the townsman and chose to follow what she thought everyone expected of her. And made the choice of the path that would gain more substance for herself and her kingdom.

Years later, having long forgotten the simple townsman, the princess looked sadly into the mirror and whispered to herself. "Why is it that even though I have all the things that I and my kingdom could ever want, why is it that I am not happy nor is my kingdom? Why is there was no one in the world that truly loves me?"

At that moment she looked in the mirror and a faint whisper seemed to come from her reflection. Saying, "There was one person many, many years ago. But with the time that has passed even though he still carries much love in his heart for you, he can no longer be yours just as you can no longer be his."

The princess jumped up and went back to the places where she once talked to the townsman. But the locations had all grown over with vines and weeds from years of neglect. Then she went to the small garden where they had talked for many hours at a time. She saw a very old box placed on top of the stone in the middle of the garden they had once sat together upon so many years ago. Both appeared to have been there alone and neglected for many years. When she removed the vines and growth that was covering the box. She slowly opened it. Inside she found a note rolled up and placed in a very plain ring. A ring with no gems or stones of any kind.

She pulled the note from the ring and read the fading writing, “My lovely princess I waited as long as I could for you to allow me the honor of placing this ring on your finger. If one day you should return to find this note, I am sorry that my love was not strong enough to wait for you any longer. Just as you must live your life doing what you think will make you happy, I must live out the short time I have left and try to be happy as well. I hope that the future will hold great happiness and joy for both of us even though we are not together.”

The princess removed the royal ring which she had worn for years and placed the very plan and simple ring on her finger. A bit of warmth and sadness went through her at the same time. As she felt the love from the townsman mixed with the sadness of knowing that the chance for them to be together was lost in the years that had passed.

Though the princess looked and tried to find out what happened to the townsman she had once loved, no one she asked knew what had happened to him or where he had gone. Though many people remember him none knew where to find him. All anyone knew is that he had simply said that it was time to move on.

The princess went back to her kingdom with the saddest thoughts of all in her heart; the feeling of what she had chosen to ignore and what might have been.
